Sedation & Sleep Dentistry

Sedation dentistry helps patients who feel anxious, overwhelmed, or fearful during dental treatment. Depending on your level of anxiety and the procedure required, we offer different sedation options to help you feel relaxed and supported throughout your visit.

Sedation Options

Oral Sedation

A safe, prescribed anti-anxiety medication taken before your appointment to help you feel calm and relaxed. Because it may make you drowsy, an adult should accompany you to and from your visit.

Nitrous Oxide (“Happy Gas”)

A gentle, fast-acting gas inhaled through a small nose mask. It helps you feel relaxed while staying awake and able to respond. The effects wear off quickly, allowing most patients to drive home afterwards. Suitable for both adults and children with mild anxiety.

IV Sedation (Sleep Dentistry)

Administered by a qualified anaesthetist, IV sedation places you in a deeply relaxed, sleep-like state. You remain conscious but typically remember very little of the procedure. Ideal for patients with moderate to severe dental anxiety. An adult escort is required after treatment.

Who Sedation Dentistry Helps

  • Patients with dental anxiety or phobia
  • Those needing longer or more complex procedures
  • Patients with a strong gag reflex
  • Individuals who prefer a more relaxed treatment experience

Our goal is to make dental care comfortable, safe, and stress-free for all patients.

Frequently Asked Questions

This depends on the type of dental treatment you need as well as various other factors such as cost and urgency. Your dentist will be able to advise your best option for your situation.

Who should consider sedation dentistry?

You may want to consider sedation dentistry if you:

  • Have a deep-rooted phobia of the dentist resulting in anxiety or panic attacks
  • Are afraid of needles
  • Have difficulty getting numb from anaesthesia
  • Gag easily
  • Have very sensitive teeth and gums

Side Effects of Sedation

Most patients experience only mild, short‑lasting side effects after sedation. What you feel will depend on the type of sedation used, but it’s common to notice:

  • Dry mouth after the procedure
  • A brief period of forgetfulness when waking
  • Mild headache or nausea
  • Grogginess or tiredness (the most common effect)

Your dentist will guide you through what to expect before your appointment and provide clear instructions so you feel safe, prepared and supported throughout your visit.

What if none of these sedation options are suitable for me?

If sedation isn’t the right fit for your medical needs or safety requirements, we may recommend having your treatment completed under general anaesthetic. In these cases, we will refer you to a trusted specialist facility where your care can be managed safely and comfortably by an experienced anaesthetic team.

Our priority is always to ensure you receive the level of support that best suits your individual needs, and we’re here to guide you every step of the way.
